noumenal [3] phenomenon [4] Kant's systems philosophy [5]

Definition

The appearance of reality to people in the form of sensations, as opposed to reality itself, the noumenal. Kant argued that people can never know reality in itself, the noumenal, but only the appearance of reality as sensation, the phenomenal. (Stacey, 2003, pp 20).
